Ritual for Spring
You on your way to create more magic in your life! - Image from Pinterest
As we enter this sacred time on the 22nd of September, we are called deeper into a new season. Of course, we are always shifting and changing. There are always new parts of ourselves being uncovered, old identities falling away, new desires emerging and different versions of ourselves asking to be met. We are never really standing still. And yet, there are certain moments in the great turning of the year where the external world mirrors something that is also happening within us.
The Equinox is one of those moments.
Twice each year, the Sun reaches a very particular point in its journey through the heavens, creating a moment where day and night are held in balance. For thousands of years, human beings have watched these great solar turning points and used them to mark the movement of the seasons, the agricultural year, ceremony, renewal and transition.
The Equinox was not simply something happening above us. It was something happening through us. It was a reminder that we too are cyclical beings, intimately connected to the movements of the Earth and the Sun. There are seasons where we are called inward, seasons where we rest and gather ourselves, seasons where something is quietly forming beneath the surface, and then there are seasons where what has been growing within us is ready to emerge.
Here in the Southern Hemisphere, the September Equinox marks our entrance into Spring.
We begin to feel the Earth waking again around us. The days stretch a little further into the evening, warmth begins to return, and beneath the surface, seeds that have been held quietly in the darkness begin to stir. Buds open, flowers emerge and life begins to move outward again. There is something deeply symbolic about this, because there are often parts of ourselves that have been doing the very same thing.
Perhaps there are dreams you have been carrying quietly.
A desire that has been growing.
A new way of seeing yourself.
A creative idea.
A new relationship with your body, your work, your relationships or your spiritual path.
Things that perhaps were not ready to be seen yet, but needed time beneath the surface before they could emerge, and this is what I love about working with the solar cycle. The natural world gives us a mirror.
It reminds us that we do not have to force everything into existence. There are seasons for planting, seasons for tending, seasons for waiting and seasons where we finally get to see what has been growing. Across cultures, seasonal turning points have long carried themes of renewal, fertility, new life, planting, growth, balance and the return of light. The details, traditions and stories differ enormously from one culture to another, but underneath them is a very familiar human remembering:
We are part of something much larger than ourselves, and so the Equinox becomes a threshold. A place where we can pause and acknowledge the season we have just travelled, honour what has been cultivated within us, release what has completed itself and consciously step into what is beginning. Because sometimes a new season arrives externally before we have actually acknowledged that we are ready to enter it internally.
This ritual is an invitation to do just that!!! Lets goooo
RITUAL:
Going inward, and going upward.
I want you to approach this as a rite of passage rather than something you need to perform perfectly.
You do not need to manifest the perfect future or figure out exactly who you are becoming. You are simply creating a moment where you can listen deeply enough to recognise what is already beginning to move within you.
Before you begin, create a small sacred space for yourself.
You might light a candle, sit outside beneath the Sun, or place something from nature beside you. A flower, a seed, a leaf, a stone or something else that reminds you of the living world and the great cycles moving around you.
Allow yourself to become quiet.
Place one hand over your heart and one over your belly, take a few slow breaths and feel yourself arrive in the space.
There is nowhere else you need to be for these moments.
You are simply listening.
I. Looking Back
Begin by allowing yourself to remember the season you have just travelled.
Think back over the months behind you and allow yourself to notice what has happened without immediately trying to judge it as good or bad.
What have you experienced?
What has stretched you?
What has softened you?
What surprised you?
What have you learned about yourself?
What has changed that perhaps you did not expect to change?
And what has been quietly growing beneath the surface, even if you could not yet see where it was leading?
Let yourself honour the version of you who lived through this season.
You do not need to judge her or decide whether she did everything perfectly. She was meeting life with the information, awareness and capacity that she had at the time.
Simply witness her.
Then ask yourself:
What wisdom am I carrying forward with me?
Take your journal and allow whatever comes through to be written down.
II. The Seeds
Now I want you to imagine yourself standing in a garden.
Beneath the earth are the seeds of everything you have been cultivating.
Some of them you planted consciously. Others may have appeared almost without you realising. A desire that arrived. A dream that kept returning. A new possibility that you could not quite explain. A part of yourself that you began to meet differently.
Consider what has been taking root within you.
What have you been cultivating during your inner season?
What has been growing quietly?
What desires have continued to return to you?
What part of your life is beginning to ask for more nourishment, attention or devotion?
And perhaps most importantly:
What is ready to grow now?
You do not need to know exactly what the finished flower will look like.
The seed does not need to know the entire shape of its future before it begins to grow.
It simply responds to the conditions around it. It receives the warmth, the water, the sunlight and the nourishment it needs, and slowly, in its own timing, it begins to emerge.
Place your hand over your heart and say:
I honour what has been growing within me.
I trust what is beginning to emerge.
I give life to what is ready to grow.
Stay here for a moment and feel what those words bring up for you.
III. The Release
Before we step fully into a new season, there may also be things we no longer wish to carry with us.
Ask yourself:
What am I no longer willing to carry into this new season?
Perhaps it is an identity you have outgrown.
A story you have been telling yourself.
A fear that has become too small for the life you are creating.
A pattern you have been repeating.
A belief about what is possible for you.
Or perhaps it is simply a version of yourself that was necessary once, but does not need to come with you any further.
Write down whatever comes.
And when you are ready, place your hand over what you have written.
Take a breath and acknowledge this part of yourself rather than fighting against it.
You might say:
I thank this part of me for protecting, guiding and teaching me.
I no longer need to carry this in the same way.
I release what is complete.
You can tear the paper, fold it away, place it beneath the Earth, or simply leave it on the page.
The ritual is not in performing the perfect action, the ritual is in the conscious decision to no longer give something the same place within you and ritual is a somatic way of moving through what you are letting go
IV. MEETING YOUR PLANT ALLY
Now that you have honoured the season behind you and released what no longer belongs, close your eyes and imagine yourself stepping into a place in nature that feels alive and welcoming to you. It might be somewhere you know, somewhere you have been before, or somewhere that exists only in your imagination.
Take your time here and allow a particular plant, flower, tree or herb to come into your awareness. Don't go looking for one or try to choose something with your mind. Let one reveal itself to you.
Spend a little time with it. Notice how it grows, the conditions it needs, the way it reaches towards the light, the way it roots itself into the Earth. Then ask it quietly:
What do you have to teach me about the season I am entering?
Allow whatever comes to you. It might be a word, an image, a feeling, a memory or simply a sense of knowing. You don't need to understand it immediately. Your ally may reveal its meaning to you over the weeks and months ahead.
When you feel complete, thank it and allow yourself to return to your body.
If you feel called to, you might later find this plant in the physical world, learn about it, grow it, or simply keep an image of it nearby as a reminder of the quality you are welcoming into this new season.
V. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD
Now imagine yourself standing at the edge of the season you have just completed. You have gathered its wisdom, honoured what it brought you and released what you no longer wish to carry.
In front of you is the new season, Take a breath and feel the difference between standing at the threshold and actually choosing to cross it.
When you are ready, take one deliberate step forward.
As you do, imagine yourself moving out of the old season and into Spring. The light is returning. The Earth is opening. Something that has been quietly forming within you is beginning to make itself known.
You don't need to know exactly where this path will take you, you only need to be willing to meet what is ready to emerge
VI. AWAKENING
Imagine yourself as the seed beneath the Earth, held in darkness and nourished through the season that has passed, you have not been doing nothing, there has been life moving within you, even when there was nothing visible from the outside.
And now the conditions are changing.
The warmth returns, the light reaches the soil, something within you begins to stir
Ask yourself:
What is ready to awaken within me now?
And then:
What am I ready to bloom into?
You might see yourself opening like a flower, reaching towards the Sun, or simply feel a shift within your body as you imagine allowing yourself to be seen more fully, there is no need to force the blooming, spring does not ask the flower to hurry, it simply creates the conditions for life to emerge again more fully and brighter
Allow yourself to receive the same permission, as you finish, place your hands over your heart and acknowledge the threshold you have crossed and the season you are entering.
You might speak your own words of welcome, or simply say:
I welcome this new season, I trust what has been growing within me, I am ready to meet what is emerging.
Take a final breath and slowly return to the space around you.
When you are ready, open your eyes.
Carry your plant ally with you into the season ahead, and let yourself notice where its medicine begins to appear in your life
you might even want to buy these plants, or get some flowers for spring and really enjoy the spring energy!
The Equinox is the threshold, the Earth is awakening, and so are you.
